Have you ever taken part in a Christian mission?
I mean an actual, go-out-and-talk-to-people-about-God mission? Like Jesus said we should? Or perhaps you wished you could, if you had the courage and know-how?
"Go forth and tell? - I can't, I don't know how!"
What if it were easy? What if you could talk to complete strangers in an easy, no-pressure, non-confrontational way?
What if someone could show you how, in a simple training day? And then go with you to show you how, working with someone who has done it before, as part of a team of ten?
"Hmmm.. that's sounding easier"
Well, that's just how it works with Through Faith Missions (TFM), an organisation that exists to do evangelism, serving local churches and involving many other Christians in the task. TFM was founded in 1985 by Rev Daniel Cozens and there is now a leadership team of 10 people. Click here to see the TFM web site.
The first major event was the "Walk of a Thousand Men", but since then there have been small and large missions to many different parts of the country, with men and women sharing the gospel, invited and supported by local churches.
In 2007, the "Walk Cumbria" mission gathered 500 volunteers from across the land, from all walks of life, to visit villages and towns across Cumbria county. They talked to people about God in pubs, on doorsteps, in schools, church events, retirement homes and in the street. And many people they spoke to gave their lives to Christ.
Then in 2008 there was Walk East Sussex Coast and in 2009, Walk National Forest. All using people just like you - ordinary, every day kind of people with a heart to share the Gospel.
"Don't you have to go to Bible College or something?"
No, although you need to be a committed Christian who attends church regularly. There is a fully developed program of Training that we all undertake - all done in a one-day training course. It's all Bible-based. and the come-with-us-and-we'll-show-you method is well tried and tested. Over 4,000 people have now been trained in mission, and TFM has led over 400 missions - mostly in Great Britain, but also some in Kenya and Uganda.
"What's the next mission?"
The next mission is for three weeks, from 18th September to 10th October 2010, and is called "Walk Saint David". You only sign up for 1 week though - not all three! There are other smaller missions that TFM organise but this is the big one.
"When does the training take place?"
There are several training bases across the country. Click here for details.
"Where do we stay overnight?"
Men usually bring a sleeping bag / bedroll and sleep in the church hall. Ladies and some men (who perhaps have back trouble like me and cannot sleep on the floor) usually stay with local church members.
"What next?
Pray and ask God what He wants you to do. Is He calling you to share your story? To witness to others? To join in, and enjoy the company of a host of others on a one-week mission?
